And yes, you can walk and lose weight.</p>
<p>The keys to weight loss from walking are intensity, duration, and consistency. Don&#8217;t worry if you can&#8217;t walk fast or for very long at first. Start slowly and work up to more strenuous walking as you can.</p>
<p>The best weight-burning intensity is 60 &#8211; 70% of your maximum heart rate. For the purpose of weight loss from walking, you can find your maximum heart rate by subtracting your age from 220. Thus, the maximum heart rate for a 50-year-old would be 170 beats per minute. Working at an intensity of 70%, the 50-year-old would lose weight by maintaining her heart rate at the target rate of 119 beats per minute.</p>
<p>If you don&#8217;t have a heart rate monitor or have trouble counting heartbeats, estimate the intensity of your walk by talking. If you can&#8217;t carry on a conversation, you&#8217;re working too hard. Back off a bit until you can walk and talk comfortably at the same time.</p>
<p>To lose weight by walking, the duration of your workout should be at least 30 minutes. That&#8217;s 30 minutes at your target heart rate, not counting warm-up. Of course you probably won&#8217;t be able to do that at first, and that&#8217;s okay. Just do as much as you can and increase as you get fitter.</p>
<p>Once you start your program, walking can help you lose weight only if you&#8217;re consistent. Walk at least five days a week. Don&#8217;t be distressed if it seems like it&#8217;s not working. Slow weight loss while building fitness, as you&#8217;re doing with your walking program, is better. The effects are cumulative, and over time you can lose a significant amount of weight.</p>

Just as an example, look at the overwhelming popularity of the TV show &#8220;The Biggest Loser.&#8221; Certainly those contestants represent extreme situations. But maybe you just want to drop 10 pounds, mainly so your current wardrobe still fits attractively. As mentioned above, other people have significant weight problems and need to lose 50 pounds or more. Besides physical appearance, health concerns are a major motivational factor. Once you develop a pattern of chronic overeating, with a penchant for sweets, fatty foods and other junk type foods that are so tantalizing and addictive, it can become a very difficult habit to break. Many people are under the false impression that they can eat whatever they want as long as they exercise. The rationale is that when you employ the exercise to lose weight program, you&#8217;re burning calories, so you&#8217;ll reach your goal without changing your diet, or at least not by much. It won&#8217;t work. Let&#8217;s see why.</p>
<p>1. What does exercise accomplish in a weight loss program?</p>
<p>Whether you need to shed 10, 50 or 100 pounds, the bottom line is that your body has excess fat. An exercise program can burn off that excess fat, while toning flabby muscles and providing benefits to your cardiovascular system. <p>The bottom line to losing weight is reducing your caloric intake. If you reduce your daily intake by 500 calories, you&#8217;ll lose about a pound a week. When you don&#8217;t drop the sugar laden foods, those calories turn right back into fat. When you add plenty of fiber-rich, complex carbohydrates, you get a reversal of this effect. The calories these foods contain often require that your body burn more calories than the food contains. So you realize a net reduction in calories consumed. Add in the exercise to lose weight factor and you&#8217;ve effectively reduced your calorie consumption across the board, resulting in safe and maximum weight loss.</p>
